Choosing Light or Dark Colored Drapes

The right fabric on your windows can make a room exciting and inspiring, and when you have a wide variety of selections to choose from, you can really select a style that speaks to your interior design and calls to mind the other design choices you’re using inside your home.

Light Colors

We can’t remember the last time we saw light-colored drapes or curtains we didn’t like. Light shades, especially neutral hues, are classic and never fall too far from fashion grace. The lightweight fabric used to make many lighter-colored curtains flows beautifully and can make a room feel more spacious. A drawback to light colors is that they will show stains and other flaws more prominently, and so may be best reserved for areas with less traffic.

Dark Colors

You know what we said about never seeing light-colored curtains we didn’t like? Well, we feel the same way about darker hues! You may think you’re restricted to brown, black, or gray when using darker colors, but a deep hue of any color can be used.

Dark colors are awesome for roomier spaces and high-ceilinged areas because they visually shrink the space to make it feel more cozy. A dark hue is also great for grounding a space with busy or eclectic decor and can lend a relaxed drama to a room.

Take care to use the same color elsewhere in the room, such as with throw pillows or other fabrics, to keep the drapes from looking awkwardly out of place. You can rely on darker shades to conceal dust and dirt but don’t use deep shades with dark-colored walls or you’ll end up with a gloomy, oppressive aesthetic.

A caveat to dark fabric is that it rarely works in smaller rooms. It’s also considered a risky design choice because the wrong dark color can dramatically impact the aesthetic of a space more so than a poor choice in a light color.

Functionality

It’s not all about looks. Light and dark-colored fabrics function differently. If you’re using drapery in a room that gets abundant direct sunlight, consider a lighter color that will reflect light to keep the room more comfortable. Dark-colored fabrics are easier to keep clean and the better choice for blocking light in bedrooms. The bottom line: dark and bright colors will fade more quickly from sunlight, and unlined dark fabrics will absorb heat and raise the temperature in a room. That’s why high-performance fabrics are a great option when choosing window treatments. Ask our team about fade-resistant performance fabrics when making your decision.

Lining: Yes or No?

Linings are interesting because they take most of the information we’re sharing and turn it upside down. Liners can make light colors keep heat in just as well as dark colors, and help dark shades keep a room cooler, depending on the type of liner. Lined drapes or curtains have extra weight that allows them to hang more attractively. Unlined options are ideal for the light breezes of summer but may not be practical year-round. The deciding factor for us, however, is that unlined drapes are easier to clean in your own washing machine than lined varieties.
