How to Clean Your Blinds without Damage

Life seems to move at a whirlwind speed much of the time. Family, work, social obligations...and cleaning your blinds on top of it all. Blinds are a delicate item and care must be taken when cleaning them to avoid the risk of irreparable damage. Regular cleaning is essential to keep your blinds looking great for the long term.

Easy Tips

What is your cleaning routine when it comes to your blinds? For most, it’s a quick wipe with a cloth, and only on the side others can see. Don’t worry, we’ve all done it! Here are a few tips to follow to stay on top of it:

  • Vacuum blinds once a month
  • Dust blinds as part of your regular housekeeping routine
  • Deep clean blinds twice yearly

Wood Blinds

Hardwood blinds differ from other materials and require a little extra TLC. Use a soft cloth sprayed with furniture polish and start at the top of the blinds. Wipe across each slat until you reach the bottom, then reverse the direction of the slats and repeat the process to ensure both sides are clean. You should always try to avoid exposing wood to moisture, but if your blinds have stubborn build-up, use a cloth dampened with warm water and a mild detergent mixture to wipe the slate. If you use this method, dry your blinds immediately, and make sure there is no moisture left behind.

Cleaning Other Materials

Blinds made from other materials, such as aluminum and faux wood, are hardier than natural wood. To dust blinds made of aluminum or faux wood, start by fully extending the blinds. Use a feather duster or soft cloth to dust slats, starting at the top. Rotate the slats and repeat when you reach the bottom. You can also place a clean sock on your hand and use it to wipe the slats. If you like to be as efficient as possible, specialty tools that clean both sides of several slats simultaneously are available at many stores.

Your vacuum brush attachment is another easy way to clean blinds. Vacuum from the top to bottom, and then side to side to ensure all areas are covered. Rotate the slats and repeat the process as you would with the dusting method. Finish up by using a dryer sheet or soft cloth sprayed with anti-static spray to wipe the slats. This will eliminate the last bits of dust and help to prevent future build-up.

If your blinds are just too grimy for the above-mentioned methods, it’s time to give them a bath. Place your blinds flat in the bathtub and fill them with just enough water to cover them. Add two or three cups of white vinegar and a bit of dish soap. Allow your blinds to soak for about 10 minutes, then clean with a sponge. An old toothbrush is a great way to get the crevices extra clean. After rinsing your blinds, you can lay them flat to dry or wipe them dry with a clean, soft cloth.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are a fair bit larger than their horizontal counterparts, but don’t let that intimidate you. Regular dusting or vacuuming is all you need to do. Work from top to bottom, and make sure to get both sides. You can spot clean vertical blinds with warm, soapy water, but make sure all soap is removed and the slat is dried thoroughly.
